Set Candle Timer For The Specific Duration

How to use the candle timer

This candle timer is a countdown you can watch: the wick lights when you press Start, the wax melts down as time passes, and an alarm rings when the candle is spent. It starts at 5 minutes, and you can set anything from a few seconds up to 99 hours.

  1. Click Set Time and enter hours, minutes and seconds.
  2. Click Set Sound to choose the alarm: Beep, Bell, Doorbell, Success, Magic, Guitar, Announce, Emergency, Hailing or Correct.
  3. Press Start. The flame lights and the candle begins to burn down.
  4. Press Pause to put the flame out for a moment, then Start again to relight it and carry on.
  5. Press Reset to bring back a full, unlit candle at the time you set.

When the countdown reaches zero, your chosen sound plays and a short "Candle Timer Is Complete" message appears.

Study until the candle dies

"Study until the candle dies" comes from a simple habit: light a candle, work until it burns out, and only then take a break. The online version gives you the same visual deadline without an open flame, smoke or wax to clean up, so you can use it at a desk, in a dorm or in a library.

A few ways to make it work:

  • Pick a length you can finish. 25 to 50 minutes suits most study sessions. Set 25 minutes for a single Pomodoro, or 45 to 50 minutes for a longer block of reading or problem sets.
  • Decide the task before you light it. "Finish chapter 6 notes" works better than "study biology."
  • Do not relight it right away. When the candle dies, stand up for 5 to 10 minutes. If you want a timed break, our break timer rings when it is time to return.
  • Keep the candle in view. Put the timer on a second screen or prop your phone next to your books. Watching the wax shrink is a quiet reminder that the session has an end.

If you want automatic focus and break rounds with a task list, use the Pomodoro timer instead and keep the candle for single, open-ended sessions.

Candle timer for the classroom

A burning candle is easy for students to read from across the room, even for kids who cannot tell time yet. Teachers use a classroom candle timer for silent reading, journal writing, clean-up, test sections and "quiet until the candle goes out" moments.

  • Project the timer on the board and switch to full screen so the candle is large and nothing else on the page distracts the class.
  • Choose a calm alarm such as Bell or Success for younger students; Doorbell or Announce cuts through a noisy room.
  • Use short candles for transitions (2 to 5 minutes) and longer ones for independent work (15 to 30 minutes).

For big digits, editable "time's up" messages and activity presets, try the dedicated classroom timer.

Full screen candle timer

Click the full-screen button to fill the whole display with the candle. It is useful for projectors, a spare monitor while you study, or a tablet on a table. Press Esc to leave full screen. While the timer runs, the remaining time also shows in the browser tab title, and the page asks your device to keep the screen awake where the browser supports it.

Candle clock, candle timer and burning timers

Before mechanical clocks, people marked time with candle clocks: candles with evenly spaced marks, where each mark that burned away meant a set amount of time had passed. This online candle clock works the same way, except the countdown is exact and you can choose any length.

Candle timer FAQ

Is there a candle stopwatch that counts up?

No. The candle timer counts down from the time you set, because the candle needs a known length to burn. If you want to measure how long something takes, use the online stopwatch.

Will the candle keep burning if I switch tabs?

The timer keeps running while the page is open, and the time left shows in the tab title. The alarm only plays while the page stays open in a browser tab, so do not close it. On phones, keep the browser in front for the most reliable alarm.

Why didn't I hear the alarm on my iPhone?

Some phones, especially iPhones, block sound until you tap the page once. Tap Start on the page yourself, check that the ring/silent switch is off, and turn the volume up.

Is it free?

Yes. The candle timer is free, has no ads and does not need an account.
